THE VIBE

Fall 2021

ART BY CHARLES WATSON

ABOUT

It's been quite a ride over these past couple of years. We've already made it through a quarter of school in a building most of us haven't stepped foot in for more than a year, but in some ways, it's gratifying being back, seeing our peers, and climbing the insurmountable stairs as per our normal routine.

But, despite the unexpected changes and transitioning to our online edition, Vibe is back, stronger than ever! We've reclaimed the traditional magazines that we were founded to create, but have also cooperatively made the decision to continue the website in its own form of the Vibe!

Our artists are back with their incredible talents and our amazing editors are tremendously thrilled to lend their expansive expertise for you to behold!

On our online edition, you can see submissions we weren't able to include on the magazine for the sake of space; enlarge submissions; preview older magazines; read about our artists; and even watch exclusive special animation submissions!

Vibe releases every quarter of the school year.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! See you in the winter!

If you would like to submit your art, please email it to vibemhs@gmail.com.

If you want to join our awesome team of editing and marketing, just let us know at the same email!

Giant Daisy Cake :))

Lemon-blackberry cake with simple blackberry and flower arch

Did you Know?

The world’s longest cake measures 5300m, and was made by the Baker’s Association Kerala (India).

Sunflower cake: chocolate cake with cascading sunflower-ish arch

1984 Cake: Project for AP Lit :D
Lemon sponge cake with lemon curd and lemon swiss meringue buttercream with chocolate accents, lemon and orange slices, and coffee beans

Fun Fact:

Will Ferrell consumed so much sugar while filming Elf that he actually became physically ill.

Symbolism for anyone familiar with the book:

  • Cake is lemon because a jingle repeated throughout the book is "oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clements"

  • Cake is split in half to symbolize past and present (past is left, present is right)

  • Sides of cake have city skylines, but the past has normal modern skyscrapers and various sized buildings, while present has low rise buildings and the giant pyramid-shaped ministries in Winston's world

  • One pyramid on top of present side of cake has the three mantras: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength

  • Past side is filled with things that they either don't have or that are rationed in Winston's world (lemons, oranges, chocolate, coffee beans, etc.)

  • On the present side, an eye symbolizes Big Brother

  • Last but not least, inside the crack (not pictured), are tiny figures of Winston and Julia (because in the story, they fall in the crack between past and present -- wanting to learn of the past, but stuck in the present)

(I'm very proud of the symbolism hehe)

Thanks, Mr. Roache for letting me do this :))

A video based on George Orwell's 1984, depicting Winston's memories of his mother, which are at the end disposed of by O'Brien. Winston is a mouse due to his fear of rats, while O'Brien is a cat that plays long with prey before its eventual demise. The song is Kate Bush's "Mother Stands for Comfort."

Zelimir the Eurasian badger. He likes wearing his grandfather's clothing.

Oti the black bear cub. (I encourage viewers to look up black bear colors; contrary to the name, they come in brown, blond, white, gray, and even combinations of these.)

A crocheted woolly mammoth I improvised—my most yarn-consuming project yet.

Fun Fact:

Paint made its first appearance about 30,000 years ago inside caves by nomads who left behind graphic representations of their lives.
